PLUTO

PORTFOLIO 23

Role: UX/UI designer, UX researcher
Tools: XD, Figma, Photoshop, illustrator
Date: 2021

Project Overview:

Pluto, is a mental health application, that provides users with daily writing prompts that help build meaningful self-reflection habits.

Users are encouraged to complete daily personalized writing prompts, allowing them to reflect on their current emotions.

Pluto was a highly collaborative project created with a Team of designers. As a team, we implemented an iterative process to improve the product with every iteration based on constructive feedback collected through testing, interviews, and surveys. My role was different on every iteration, so every member had a chance to tackle a different aspect of the project.

Preliminary Research:

After conducting various interviews and surveys, it became apparent that a large number of our target market feel that journaling can be daunting;  deliberately reflecting on one's feelings, issues, and insecurities can be a challenge for most.

It became clear that Pluto needed to make the process of journaling fun, easy, and approachable. In order to help users develop self-reflection habits, we concluded that the best approach would be to gamify the journaling process. Introducing a point system and a social aspect to the application can motivate users to stay consistent and make forming self-reflection habits less challenging and more fun/enjoyable.

Ideation:

PLUTO differentiates itself from other mental health apps by generating prompts in response to user inputs. Three iterations of the application were created with a group of designers. We conducted usability tests between every iteration to ensure the UI met the user's needs/wants.

User Testing:

We conducted usability testing, surveys, and interviews between every iteration to gain the necessary feedback to inform the design and make design decisions.

Alongside user testing, the research team conducted thorough data to develop various journaling prompts introduced to the user on a daily basis, informed by the user's entries and responses.

I thoroughly enjoyed working on this project and developing Pluto. I loved the collaborative process of taking on different roles on every iteration, from UX and UI Design to User testing and User research. Seeing how each team member added their own touch when it was their turn to develop features and finalize designs was a pleasure.

Gamifying the journaling process was challenging, but we landed on a style and atmosphere that resonated very well with our target audience; during interviews, many users pitched in on various awards, colors, and planet designs that we used to inform the final look of the application.

Takeaways:

What I loved doing the most
What I enjoyed doing the most was the user flow on the second iteration. For Iteration-2, my team member Misha and I were in charge of UX, and we had a great time developing the user flow from the initial concept wireframes we had created.
